POP! Stand Out In Any Crowd – Book Review

This book recognizes that our world is filled with a plethora of products, ideas and messages. All competing for our attention.

POP is an acronym for Purposeful, Original and Pithy.

Janet and I used these processes to develop the tag line for Utah Real Estate Accountants, “From Your Balanced Books To A Balanced Life”. Playing from the ambiguity of ‘balanced’ and the message that it sends…your business will take all the time and energy you are willing to give it: Live a balanced life.

Each chapter starts with an appropriate quote and recognizes the author of the quote. Chapter 9, ‘Create the Next New Thing with the Half-and-Half Technique.’ The quote is by Rosabeth Moss Kanter, “Creativity is like looking at the world through a kaleidoscope. You look at a set of elements, the same ones everyone else sees, but then reassemble those floating bits and pieces into an enticing new possibility”. Sam Horn gives lots of strategies and very much like a workbook, assigns tasks. Since we are an accounting firm and deal with taxes, she did a word play as an example of one of the many was to combine ideas into a new word: Intaxication (euphoria at getting a tax refund, which lasts until you realize it was your money to begin with)

You do not have to consider yourself creative. She takes you through small steps with lots of practical examples. It is fun and inspiring. This is the second title of Sam’s on our bookshelf. The first was about elevator introductions (elevator speeches). “Ten Steps to Crafting a Compelling Elevator Speech”.

She has a great depth of understanding of the power of words and effective communication. Her Amazon, Kindle page has this description, “Sam Horn, Intrigue Expert, helps people create one-of-a-kind presentations, pitches, brand and books that scale their influence for good.”
